Prime minister: Armenia to continue developing nuclear energy industry, talks are underway with investors
The Armenian government will continue developing the nuclear energy industry in order to maintain the current level of Armenia’s energy security, Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan said today at the presentation of the program “The Ways of Long-Term Development (until 2036) of the Energy System of Armenia”.
In his words, the government is determined to carry out new reforms in energy sector and solve the existing problems.
The head of government said the program was developed in cooperation with the USAID and aims to develop various capacities and infrastructure ensuring regional integration. The program’s purpose is to improve the quality and reliability of the means of energy delivery and the services rendered to consumers, increase the efficiency of investment, reduce losses, and take measures on financial restructuring of the system and revising the methodology, principles and mechanisms for tariff calculation.
According to the prime minister, it is planned to extend the service life of the 2nd unit of Armenian Nuclear Power Plant for ten years. The corresponding work is being done, and negotiations over the construction of a new nuclear power unit are underway with investors.
