October 16 is Armenian Press Day
The Press Day is marked in Armenia today, on October 16.
The day was created to acknowledge the role of the national press in the life of Armenia. The first Armenian language newspaper ‘Azdarar’ (‘Herald’) was published on October 16, 1794 in Madras, India. 18 issues of ‘Azdarar’ were released in 1794-1796. Father Harutyun Shmavonyan was the founder and publisher of ‘Azdarar’.
To celebrate that event, the Armenian government took a decision in 2004 to designate October 16 as Day of Employee of the Press. The day was later renamed to the Armenian Press Day.
