Armenians paid tribute to victims of Berlin Christmas market attack
People in Armenia’s capital Yerevan have lit candles, left flowers and bowed in memory of the victims of the Christmas market attack in Berlin. Twelve people were killed and 48 remain in hospital after a lorry ploughed into crowds of people gathering around market stalls in the capital on Monday.
Media reports suggest the suspected driver fled the scene but was later detained. German media named him as Naved B, 23, an asylum-seeker from Pakistan. The suspect denies any involvement in the attack. Police have not confirmed the reports and Berlin’s police chief said it isn’t clear if the arrested man was the driver.
Earlier Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan sent a letter to the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, expressing condolences to the friendly people of Germany and families of the victims, wishing them strong spirit and a speedy recovery to all injured.
