European Parliament: Turkey needs new constitution
Ria Oomen-Ruijten, a Dutch politician and member of the Christian Democratic Appeal, calls on in a preliminary report on Ankara for the European Parliament that the country needs a new constitution, Turkish “Zaman” daily reported. The report will be discussed tomorrow at Foreign Relations Committee and will be put on voting at plenary session of 2011.
The report covers Cypriot and Kurdish conflicts, freedom of press, constitutional amendments, judicial syste, and other related issues.
It’s believed that Turkey may become a democratic country if the constitution is complied with basic human rights and freedoms.
The constitution Turkey has today was written in 1980 by the generals who made revolution and was adopted in 1982. The legislative package initiated by ruling “Justice and development” party and adopted by the parliament was put on public voting on September 12 and had positive results.
Due to those amendments Turkey can have Institute of Ombudsman, the working class may declare strikes, ordinary citizens won’t be sentenced in military courts, etc.
