‘No to Robbery’ civic initiative rules out possibility of demonstrators’ meeting with Armenian President
‘We are already gathering to consider our further actions,” member of ‘No to Robbery’ civic initiative Aram Manukyan told reporters today.
He said that yesterday, on June 23 they could not attend the protest held in Liberty Square of Yerevan against the power price hike and the subsequent march and sit-in on Bagramian Avenue because they were detained by police early in the morning June 23.
Manukyan stressed they are engaged in a peaceful struggle. “We have one goal – to cancel the decision on a rise in electricity prices,” he said, ruling out the possibility of a meeting between demonstrators and Armenian President.
It should be noted that on the night of June 24 the protesters, who gathered in downtown Yerevan for a sit-in, rejected the proposal to meet with Armenian president. On June 22 the head of state also agreed to meet a group of 5 demonstrators, but that proposal was turned down as well.
A rally is now underway on Bagramian Avenue in downtown Yerevan to protest against a rise in electricity tariffs in Armenia. Deputy Chief of Armenian Police Human Poghosyan suggested that participants continue their rally in Liberty square, but they have refused.
Wednesday night, June 24, was quiet in Yerevan. Former and current MPs, intellectuals, representatives of the clergy and show business, lawyers and reporters spent the night together with protesters on Bagramian Avenue. They formed a live shield between police and demonstrators. This morning new policemen took place of their colleagues who maintained public order on Bagramian Avenue at night.
