We should protect these people: PACE President on Armenian civilians killed by Azerbaijani army
Prior to the start of the autumn session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), PACE President Anne Brasseur today responded to questions of reporters.
The staff correspondent of Panorama.am asked the PACE President a question concerning the latest actions of Azerbaijani troops using now also artillery weapons and rockets, which results in casualties among civilian population of border regions. “All this is happening – as you noted - amid the worsening human rights situation in Azerbaijan. Please comment on it. Is Baku making an attempt to distract the international community’s attention with such steps?” the correspondent asked.
Anne Brasseur said when browsing through newspapers, one first of all sees Ukraine, and what is taking place there is horrible. Then there is the migrant crisis, and each new crisis they are facing overshadows the others, which does not mean that the conflict is over, the PAXE president said, noting that the same is true for Nagorno Karabakh. The escalation of violence raises concern. It is a conflict, but violence cannot be an answer. The media should provide more coverage of that subject as we should protect those people by really putting pressure on both sides to reach an agreement and resolve the problem, she said.
As was reported, the key issues of the PACE autumn session are the migrant crisis in Europe and the Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize awards ceremony.
