Although Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry has been trying hard to interfere the NKR Ombudsman’s Office to be granted membership of European Ombudsmen’s Institution, on 31 August the EOI granted its NKR colleague institution membership to the EOI. All the 11 members of executive body of the institute voted for NKR membership.

Armenian Ombudsman Armen Harutyunyan and the NKR Ombudsman Yuri Hayrapetyan told at news conference today that they are going to attend the Institute’s annual meeting in Italy.

“Regarding our institutional status we are on equal platform. Karabakh’s Institute together with its German, French, English and Azerbaijani colleagues attends annual conference,” Armen Harutyunyan said.

Previous year, just after the foundation of NKR Ombudsman’s Institute, Azerbaijan’s Ombudsman Elmira Suleimanova stated that “it’s a disgraceful show, the international community will not recognize Karabakh’s independence and any state institution founded here is not recognizable either.”

Panorama.am reporter reminded the two Ombudsmen this statement and asked comments related to it.

Yuri Hayrapetyan declared that after Suleimanov made her disgraceful statement, Azeri reporters advised her to look at Armenian and NKR Ombudsmen Institutes as she had much to learn from them. “Sometimes I joke that Azerbaijan has contributed to NKR membership due to their strategy of demanding rejection of our membership,” NKR Ombudsman said.
