PARENT DISCONTENT DRIVE TO FIND FUNDING SOURCES
"High School system will be introduced in 2009-2010 academic year but pilot programs will be introduced in thirty-forty schools already in 2007-2008," Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Kamo Areyan told a briefing at the municipality today also saying High School Investment Concept Paper and Timeline are ready. In his words, an interagency committee must be formed to implement the pilot programs in order to select schools and provide for the material and technical base.
Speaking about common exam system, Areyan mentioned that the number of subjects subject to common exams will get bigger this year, including foreign languages and mathematics. The deputy mayor said this year the academic week will be six days like last year also saying it is not possible to shift to five day academic week due to intensity of programs and textbooks.
In Areyan's words, there are 187 computer classrooms in the schools of the city now and 58 of them are connected to internet. The deputy mayor said the World Bank program of supplying schools with computers supposes "participation by parent community" which causes discontent among parents. Areyan said 60 schools are in the list.
"We are not proceeding with this program yet but we ought to finish it because some of the computers are purchased and we must find co-financing source for co-funding the rest without causing discontent of parents," Areyan summed up.
