“At this point Armenia has 6 month’s granulated sugar in stock. The pricing tariffs for sugar will not be subject to change within the upcoming year,” as officially announced Ashot Shahnazaryan, Chairman of the RA State Committee for Protection of Economic Competition in today’s press conference.

He stated that the havoc created in the sugar market aimed at leading to an artificial deficit, “without any grounds” for that. The Committee Chairman qualified this as a result of anti-competitive agreement, wherein, so to say, the importers are not involved. As to A. Shahnazaryan, because of this situation mostly the retail outlets and their staff benefited.

He also related that the Committee ahs started organization of market surveys. They got calls witnessing to the fact that currently there are no queues for sugar in the retail shops of the Kentron, Malatia-Sebastia and other districts of the city, sugar is available in the majority of those outlets, and it is sold at 220-230 drams per kilo. The survey showed that within a single day sugar quantity sufficient for 10-day stocking was sold in a shop of the main importer.
After the press conference was over, the Panorama.am journalist’s own survey held in 4 groceries located in Khorenatsi street, adjacent to the Committee’s residence, showed absence of sugar in one such grocery, selling price of 300 drams in two others, and 270 in the fourth. The Committee Chairman reassured that the check-ups will be continued, and if this tendency lasts, then a corresponding decision will be taken and sanctions will be defined.

For information: almost 84% of granulated sugar is imported by the “Salex Group” company. In Armenia 60 thousand tons of granulated sugar is consumed.
