Armenian Human Rights Ombudsman Armen Harutunyan discussed with Thomas Hamerburg, Chief Commission on Human Rights at the Council of Europe, the results of Humerburg’s recent visit to Armenia. Harutunyan held the meeting with the commissioner in the course of his visit to Strasburg from October 17 to 19.

The commissioner once again highlighted issues that are still in the agenda of Armenia. According to information released by the office of information and public relations of the Armenian ombudsman, the commissioner mentioned issues related to alternative military service, torture in prisons and insufficiency of healthy environment in such establishments. He also pointed to the necessity to have alternative TV channels and raise the effectiveness of the judiciary.

Armen Harutunyan also met with Jan-Paul Costa, chairman of the European Court. During the meeting, the two discussed cases addressed to the European Court. Mr. Costa attached importance to strengthening the judiciary in Armenia and elaborating procedures at the national level of applying to the European Court taking into consideration the size of applications sent from Armenia as well as other countries.
