USA SUPPORTS ARMENIA TO BUILD NEW POWER STATION
Today Josef Pennington, the temporary attorney of the USA affairs in Armenia, announced that the USA has never been against to build a new power station in Armenia. This announcement he made after signing “Environmental evaluation” cooperation agreement with Armen Movsisyan, the minister of Energetic. The USA disposes 2mlndollars to bring into life the agreement.
According to him, this is Armenian government who should make the final decision to build the new block. He also mentioned that the USA is concerned about Mecamor power station, but at the same time they know that in order to close the power station Armenia needs a new one. “Armenian government should decide how much powerful the new block should be, and we are ready to help to carry out the planning part,” said the diplomat.
Pennington also said that it is early to speak about the USA financing, “It is difficult to say that the USA will finance the project directly, but the American government can help to find financing sources.” Besides, today Areg Galstyan, the vice minister of Energetic, signed “Technical Substantiation” cooperation memorandum with Igor Zakharov, the director of PA Consulting.
The Armenian power station exploited in 1976 January, and closed in 1989. Connected with energetic crisis the second block was exploited in 1995. According to the experts the power station can work till 2016. According to preliminary evaluations 280mlndollars are needed to close the old block and 2 billion dollars to build the new one.
