INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DESERTIFICATION
Problem of desertification is a global problem in our regional countries and in the world in general. Today Ashot Vardevanyan of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the person responsible for the implementation of the UN convention on “Fight against Desertification” held a meeting with the journalists covering the global problem of desertification.
According official information Armenia faces desertification because of the inaccurate usage of irrigation water and agricultural territories. He said that in 1999-2000 82% of territory in Armenia was desertificated.
“The system of conducting a monitoring is not well adopted in the country yet, hence we are not sure what part of the country is under threat of desertification but we are sure to say that the process is more slowed down,” he said.
