“LIFE IMPRISONMENT SOFT PUNISHMENT”
The Minister of Justice of Armenia Gevorg Danielyan met with Stepan Grigoryan, Armen Ter-Sahakyan, Armenak Mnjoyan, and Arsen Artsruni who are sentenced to life imprisonment. The condemned have shared with the Justice Minister their concerns of changing death sentence with life sentence. They said that they dispute the decision of the President of Armenia by sentencing them life imprisonment by August 30, 2003 decree. According to the condemned this is a violation of Constitution of Republic of Armenia, International Documents and Inter-State legislation.
Minister Danielyan did not accept some of the condemned conclusions and gave detailed explanations to their questions. The Justice Minister said that their death sentence was changed into life imprisonment not because of some legislative reforms, but the President announced amnesty.
The Minister said that compared with death sentence life imprisonment is a soft type of the punishment, which is confirmed by some international documents.
