GNC ALFA TO BUILD FIBER OPTIC NETWORK IN ARMENIA
The Public Services Regulatory Commission of the Republic of Armenia by its Decision No 686A, dated 10 December 2008, granted a Public Telecommunications Network License to “GNC Alfa” CJNC. The License is awarded for 10-years period and covers the whole territory of Armenia. GNC Alfa, which has been established in 2007, considers the main directions of its activities construction and operation of backbone telecommunications networks and provision of transmission services. The GNC Alfa Network, which will be based on fiber optic cable infrastructure, will mainly pass along existing and future Gas pipelines. According to Hayk Faramazyan, General Director of GNC Alfa, the modern technologies, materials and equipment used, highest level of the cable route protection due to Gas pipeline, as well as existence of experienced technical personnel will ensure that the quality and reliability of GNC Alfa network are fully in line with the international standards. The works on construction of Yerevan-Meghri (Armenia-Iran border) segment of the network are already started and will be completed by May-June 2009. The second phase of works includes construction of the Yerevan- Georgian border segment, network extension towards the nearly located towns and interconnection with the fiber optic systems of Georgia and Iran.
Last week, within the framework of Armenia-Iran Joint Intergovernmental Commission works, a relevant Memorandum has been signed between GNC Alfa and Iranian network operator TIC. Completion of the above programs will allow the company to provide the Armenian fixed and mobile operators and Internet service providers with backbone transmission circuits, offer VPN services to the Armenian enterprises, as well as transit services to the neighboring countries’ telecommunications operators, some of which have already expressed their interest in this project. This network will also have strategic importance for the country, as its operation will provide alternative channels to the outer world.
