NINO BURJANADZE SAYS OPPOSITION WILL NOT ATTACK PARLIAMENT
Currently the Georgian opposition is holding a populous demonstration in Tbilisi. Nino Burjanadze, the President of “Democratic Movement-United Georgia” Party has given an exclusive interview to Panorama.am just before the demonstration. -Mrs. Burjanadze, what expectations do you have from this demonstration? -We are sure that many will take part in today’s demonstration to demand Saakashvili’s resignation. I think that today should be a significant and much turning day in our history. We should get the President’s resignation in peaceful atmosphere. -Do you think what has happened in Revolution of Roses will happen today? -No, I don’t think so. The situation then was quite different as parliamentary elections were conducted and the question of their legitimism was raised. Currently we are not going to enter any of the state buildings. We have adopted quite different strategy now. -What strategy is it? -It is the peaceful and constitutional strategy of solving a question. But just a little different one. -How do you evaluate the authorities’ activities before 9 April? As we know, some of your followers have been attacked. -Well, not only they have been attacked and bitten but they are put under arrest. This is the evidence to the fact that the Government has nothing learnt from the previous situations. And, here we have another point why they should leave their positions. - Mrs. Burjanadze, some experts say that no revolution will take place in Georgia, not because Saakashvili’s Administration is so powerful, but because the opposition does not have such resources. -We are not going to make a revolution. We are going to make the President to resign and the President’s resignation is not a revolution. - It is said that the Georgian opposition is financed by Russian forces. What would you say in this regard? -I have no comments. The opinions can differ. They should have facts. It is the President and his followers who have spread such rumors to smear the opposition. They have even broadcast a film that the opposition is going to make a military revolution but it is a pure false.
