Tennis: David Nalbandian withdraws from ATP event
David Nalbandian has pulled out of the ATP Copa Telmex after picking up a leg injury during his second-round win on Wednesday, foreign media say.
The former world number three, playing in his first event since undergoing hip surgery in May, overcame Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver in three sets on Wednesday but injured his adductor in the process.
Tournament director Martin Jaite said: "David officially announces his withdrawal from the event. The match against [Albert] Montanes will not go ahead and the Spanish player will advance directly to the semi-finals."
On the Buenos Aires clay on Thursday, top seed David Ferrer lost only three games en route to a second-round victory over Frederico Gil.
The 27-year-old Spaniard breezed past his Portuguese opponent 6-3 6-0 to set up a quarter-final clash with sixth seed Igor Andreev.
Andreev was made to work harder for his last-eight berth, but eventually overcame Spaniard Marcel Granollers 3-6 6-3 6-4.
Fourth seed Juan Monaco also needed three sets to get past fellow Argentinian Juan Ignacio Chela 7-6 (7/3) 4-6 6-2.
Monaco will face another compatriot in the last eight after eighth seed Horacio Zeballos saw off Spanish wild card Carlos Moya 6-4 6-4.
