Vancouver 2010: Plyuschenko claims silver in figure skating
The sixth day of Winter Olympic competition in Vancouver was rife with incredible performances including Germany's Maria Riesch capturing Womens' Alpine Skiing Super Combined and Christine Nesbitt claiming Canada's third gold medal, though Evgeniy Plyushenko’s loss in Figure Skating will once again have many talking of the judging criteria in the sport.
The big shock of the evening or at least one that will have those in Figure Skating debating judging criteria again, saw Evan Lysacek of the United States (257,67points) edge Russia's Evgeniy Plyushenko (256,36 points) for the gold medal and Japan's Daisuke Takahashi (247,23 points) the bronze. After winning the short program on Tuesday evening, Evgeniy Plyushenko's free skate graded out lower than Evan Lysacek by 1.86 on technical merits, despite being clean and once again raising issues of grading criteria. Controversy is never far from judging in Figure Skating and these Olympics will likely see some changes on how jumps, the quad in particular, are considered, foreign media reported.
