The Vice President of Turkish Republican People’s Party Onur Oymen referred to the Armenian-Turkish protocols and the US Foreign Affairs Committee to approve the resolution on Armenian Genocide while talking to the reporters. Zaman reported that the opposition representative has been seriously concerned about the adoption of the resolution and condemned its approval.
The Turkish Deputy pointed that according to the UN convention on Genocide only international courts are authorized to make decisions on common issues and not the parliaments of different states.
“We condemn that decision but it’s not enough we should act. The protocols signed with Armenia should be recalled back from Mejlis as soon as possible. They don’t have any value, they are against our interests. I think it was right to call our Ambassador back for some consultations, but at the same time I don’t think it’s right not to send him back to assume his office. We need our Ambassador to protect our interests in America. Washington should be left without Ambassador longer,” Turkish Deputy said.
On 4 March the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs approved the resolution 252 recognizing the Armenian Genocide. 23 Congressmen voted in favour of the resolution while 22 rejected it.
Panorama.am recalls that Turkey has traditionally rejected the mass killings of 1,5 million Armenians carried out early in the 20th century and took the criticism of the West painfully. The Armenian Genocide has been recognized by lots of states. It was first recognized by Uruguay in 1965. Later Russia, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Greece, Cyprus, Lebanon, Canada, Venezuela, Argentina and the US 42 states did the same. The Armenian Genocide has been recognized also by Vatican, the Council of Europe, the World Council of Churches.
