Armenian community of Georgia call on Saakashvili to recognize Armenian Genocide
Armenian community of Georgia addressed the President of Georgia and the Georgian Parliament, asking to consider the issue of officially recognizing the Armenian Genocide carried out in the Ottoman Empire.
Letters with the request of drafting a law on this issue were sent to the head of state, and also to the chairpersons of the parliament and the parliamentary fractions. Besides, similar letters were written to the ethnic Armenian MP-s in Georgia. These MPs were asked to issue a statement on the matter during the parliamentary session before April 24, and to request the parliament of Georgia to commemorate the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923.
The appeal was initiated by NGOs: The Armenian Community of Georgia, The Armenian Cooperation Centre of Georgia, and Association of Armenian Students of Georgia.
April 24 of this year is a landmark date of 95 years since the first genocide of the XX century – the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire of 1915-1923 – was launched. As a result of the genocide over two million Armenians were killed on their historic homeland. Genocide is classified by the UN as a crime against humanity; therefore limitation period is not applied to it.
As it stands, over 20 states officially recognized the Armenian Genocide, along with the international organizations, such as the European Union and the Council of Europe. Also, today the issue of the official recognition of the Genocide is discussed in numerous countries, e.g. USA, Israel, Spain, Bulgaria, Serbia, etc.
