WPFC urges Azerbaijani President to stop judicial harassment
The World Press Freedom Committee (WPFC) addressed a letter to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev urging him to release the imprisoned Azeri journalist Eynulla Fatullayev, according to Turan.
“The World Press Freedom Committee asks your judicial system to immediately release the imprisoned Azeri journalist Eynulla Fatullayev consistent with the European Court on Human Rights’ ruling in his case. We urge you and your State to follow the Court’s instructions to the letter as soon as possible,” the committee chairman Richard Winfield said in the letter.
According to the letter, during his unjust incarceration, Mr. Fatullayev has also been charged with illegal drug possession, an allegation that both domestic and international independent human rights organizations have found both far-fetched and politically motivated. The letter says Azerbaijan does all this for a single goal: to avoid the Court’s instructions and leave Fatullayev in jail.
“Mr. President, again, we urge you to stop this judicial harassment of Mr. Fatullayev, follow the Court’s instructions and have him released from prison immediately,” the letter reads.
The World Press Freedom Committee is an organization representing 45 press freedom groups from throughout the world.
