Brazilian police foil bank robbery attempt sheduled during Brazil-Portugal match
Brazilian police Wednesday foiled an attempted bank robbery scheduled to be carried out during Brazil's next match at the FIFA World Cup on Friday, arresting one suspect.
Police found a 400-meter-long tunnel built by the would-be robbers in their attempts to rob a Banco do Brasil branch in the town of Sao Jose dos Campos, 97 km from Sao Paulo, according to The Peoples Daily.
The tunnel, which starts in a nearby house, reaches a sewage system connected to the bank.
In the house, police found several weapons, a large quantity of ammunition, carts to be used to transport money, and radios tuned to police frequencies.
Police said the attempted robbery was scheduled to be carried out during Brazil's next match at the World Cup on Friday morning brazil time, when all banks are still closed.
Investigations began two weeks ago when bank clerks heard suspicious noises and reported it to police. After the tunnel was spotted, police arrested a suspect, but others escaped.
