Violence against journalists continues in Azerbaijan
The Media Rights Institute has released the report on condition of press during 6 months of 2010. The number of convicted journalists and the cases of physical and psychological pressure on them exceeds those in other countries, according to the report, Turan says.
26 suits have been filed against the newspapers during the period and all they were private cases.
During 6 months physical pressure was imposed on 57 journalists, but these cases have not been investigated. These were mainly journalists of Azadlig and Zerkalo newspapers and Azadlig radio.
According to the report, as compared with the neighboring countries, Azerbaijan has much fewer electronic media and radio stations. During six months condition of prints did not change, there are still problems with the newspapers’ street sales.
The report urges the authorities to adopt the law on defamation, eliminate the falsified court decisions and investigate physical violence against journalists.
