Azerbaijan to pay $12 per person as flood relief
Three months have passed since the flood of Kura and Araz rivers, and the situation of local population is getting worse, said Mehman Aliyev, Director of Turan News Agency , and the member of the ‘Kura’ civil society headquarters in his interview to “Objective TV”, according to Turan.
According to him, if people had some small funds at the beginning of the flood, now they have exhausted, and people suffer badly: their homes are destroyed, and some flats need repair; they have lost harvest.
Five manat ($6) a week is intended per person as flood relief, but funds are paid only once two weeks, which makes $12 a month. Aliyev said that, they have just begun paying compensation, and most people have not received it yet.
Methods and criteria of calculations are not clear, and authorities do not explain it. There are some facts that compensation has been paid to some people living not in the flood zone, but near the cotton-processing plant in Sabirabad.
“Most of those who had suffered have not received a coin,” Aliyev said. To draw the attention to the problem of the people living in the flood zone, the Kura appealed to president 10 days ago, but has not received an answer yet.
But the ways of paying compensation are not satisfactory, and under the existing corrupting atmosphere similar large-scale flood can take place again.
