Azerbaijani bloggers still jailed
The appeal of Azerbaijani bloggers Emin Milli and Adnan Hajizada, who have been sentenced to 2.5 and 2 years of imprisonment, has been rejected by the Azerbaijani Supreme Court today, Turan reported.
The appeal says that a particular decision should be made on the judges of the first and appeal’s instances that have passed illegal sentences.
The bloggers also requested to punish the investigators that violated law during the investigation. It has been stressed that the bloggers’ rights to physical inviolability, personal inviolability and fair examination of the European Human Rights Convention have been violated.
Thus, Azerbaijani authorities once again disregarded the calls of the international community ro set the bloggers free. Attorneys said they will appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.
The bloggers have been convicted for their public activities and, particularly, for the video about donkey criticizing corruption in Azerbaijan posted online
On November 11, 2009 Baku’s Sabail district court sentenced bloggers Hajizada and Milli to 2 and 2.5 years of imprisonment on charge of hooliganism. A number of media, NGOs and political institutions have slammed the sentence and expressed conviction the bloggers have been jailed for political reasons.
