Iran under international pressure over stoning threat
During this Muslim month of Ramadan (August 11-September 11), supposedly a time of peace and forgiveness, the Iranian government is upholding a death-by-stoning sentence on one of its female citizens. The Vatican as well as the French and Italian governments, have appealed the sentence over the weekend.
The stoning case, given prominent coverage in the international media, demonstrates that the Islamic Republic is still pursuing Old-Testament-style vengeance as part of its continuing war against women’s rights.
Ashtiani was sentenced to death by stoning last July, but due to international pressure, Iran had backed off from imposing it. However, the mother of two could still be hanged. She is currently incarcerated in East Azerbaijan Province.
The BBC and Agence France Presse (AFP) have reported that French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner today vowed "to do anything" to save Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, 43.
"If I must go to Tehran to save her, I'll go to Tehran," Kouchner added after meeting one of Ashtiani's lawyers in Paris.
