Death toll of survivors of Haitian earthquake hit 253
1.3 million survivors of January's devastating Haitian earthquake are currently threatened by a new humanitarian crisis – the cholera. The majority of this poor Caribbean nation still lives in tented camps and the slowing of the epidemic death toll, in fact, isn’t a solution, since the outbreak may still widen.
"We have registered a diminishing in numbers of deaths and of hospitalized people in the most critical areas. The tendency is that it is stabilizing, without being able to say that we have reached the peak," Gabriel Thimote, director general of Haiti's health department, said.
According to the source the toll from the cholera epidemic in quake-hit Haiti has risen to 253 dead and 3,115 infected.
"We must gear up for a serious epidemic, even though we hope it won't happen," Nigel Fisher, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Haiti, told Reuters.
