Haiti cholera death rate climbed 442
At least 442 people are now confirmed dead in Haiti following a cholera outbreak that has proven to be the nation's worst public health crisis since a devastating earthquake leveled the country in January.
Health officials say that all of the dead were infected with the same strain of the disease, which is thought to have come from South Asia.
The United Nations is investigating to determine whether Nepalese peacekeepers in Haiti were responsible for bringing cholera into the country, but cautioned against rushing to judgment.
Cholera is caused by bacteria that contaminate drinking water. The massive earthquake in January devastated Haiti's infrastructure, making residents vulnerable to outbreaks of cholera and other waterborne diseases.
