Azerbaijan’s MFA surprised and disappointed with US State Dep assessment
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry released a statement of surprise and disappoint over the U.S. Department of State assessment to Azerbaijani elections issued on November 8, Azerbaijani “Trend” news agency reported.
It’s worth reminding that U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Philip Crowley declared the November 7 parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan were peaceful, nevertheless, the elections did not meet international standards.
The statements issued by the Department of State on the elections in any country, as a rule, does not essentially differ from the assessments of the elections by authoritative international organizations.
According to the press release, the Department of State announced that the parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan did not meet international standards. The statement refers to the conclusions reached by the observation missions of the OSCE/ODIHR, Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and European Parliament. However, the referred document does not contain similar assessment.
The statement issued by the international organizations notes some shortcomings and stresses that the elections were conducted peacefully and in a debate, characterized by the participation of all opposition parties and the observation missions assessed the voting positively in 90 percent of the polling stations. It shows that the elections are generally won the confidence of the population.
According to the press release, The Azerbaijani government considers that conducting of democratic, fair and transparent elections is the main target of the state, praises the positive activities carried out in this field, the Central Election Commission and the relevant state bodies will investigate the shortcomings observed in the electoral process and take appropriate measures.
