Armenia’s PSRC has allocated frequencies to Armenia’s leading mobile operator VivaCell-MTS for building 4G LTE network
VivaCell-MTS, the subsidiary of Mobile TeleSystems OJSC, announces that the PSRC (Public Services Regulating Committee) satisfied the application of the Company for building mobile network through LTE technology and gave respective permission to use sections of radio-frequencies in the range of 40 MHz, 2500-2520 MHz and 2620-2640 MHz in Yerevan, and 2600-2640 MHz in the regions, till November 4, 2019. According to the PSRC decision, VivaCell-MTS should launch the LTE network as a commercial service before March 1, 2011.
According to the PSRC decision, VivaCell-MTS should launch the LTE network as a commercial service before March 1, 2011.
Starting mid-2010, together with world’s major technology suppliers and terminal developers, VivaCell-MTS was carrying out functional testing of 4G LTE, in order to determine realistic network scenarios and measure the quality of end-user experience. By December 1, 2010, VivaCell-MTS will launch a special 4G LTE testing zone in the center of Yerevan. The aim of creating the testing zone is to observe the actual 4G LTE network performance for speed, stability of inter-cell handover and other conditions required for commercial operation, prior to the full-scale launch of extra-high-speed 4G LTE commercial service in late February-March. Initially, the commercial 4G will be available in Yerevan, but later on the coverage eventually will be expanded to the major cities and other areas of the country.
LTE is a mobile technology of forth generation (4G). 4G LTE is considered to be the next generation of mobile broadband after existing 3.5G/HSPA and HSPA+ technologies already in place. In ideal conditions it provides the speed of data transfer from base station to the device of the subscriber up to 100 Mbps and speed from the subscriber to the base station – up to 50 Mbps. In real environments, the service will offer downlinks and uplinks approximately 10 times faster than the current 3G services.
“VivaCell-MTS’ LTE rollout positions Armenia to be one of the few global leaders in 4G deployment,” highlighted VivaCell-MTS General Manager Ralph Yirikian. “The accelerated development of telecommunication technologies makes time one the most critical components for success in the future. Very soon we will celebrate the test launch of one of the most promising 4G technology - LTE. Taking advantage of the most latest and innovative telecom technology in the world will give our customers a competitive advantage. Like in the case of 3.5G network available in around 94% of the populated areas of the country, VivaCell-MTS will be rolling out its 4G LTE until it will be available to all residents of Armenia.
