President Gul trying to take a new initiative on Armenian-Turkish rapprochement
According to “Ermenihaber.am” news publication, President of Turkey Abdullah Gul answered to reporters’ questions while flying back from Turkmenistan.
Turkish President answered a few questions on Armenian-Turkish theme, which you can find below.
-Currently we’re flying over Armenia’s airspace. There are certain obstacles in ties with Armenia. But still, do you have any hope
with the normalization of relations?
- I’ve mentioned it in Mejlis also. Today’s de facto status is beneficial for neither side. If a fine cooperation, settlement of problems and removal of all doubts had been [the] alternative – a large-scale economic cooperation would begin. Within a short period of time there would be a blast in Caucasus. Neither side gains being deprived of it. A good launch was made bravely, which was kicked off by my letter.
- Will you take another initiative?
- We are really trying to. We have been working with regards to the Caucasus. [This is] one of the efforts.... I give recommendations to the relevant officials on this matter. We are constantly in touch with Sargsyan, Aliyev, Putin and Medvedev. The issue remains hot. The psychological barrier has been overcome.
- Does Russia have any contribution?
- I suppose the issue will be solved. The process [of rapprochement] hasn’t died.
