Yerevan – World book capital
UNESCO declared Yerevan world book capital of 2012, but certain problems should be met before that to present that honorable festive event. The director of National Library Davit Sargsyan shared his concerns in this respect with Panorama.am.
First, the director is sure the bookstores should be re-founded. “Each community of the city should have at least one bookshop. Some big and comprehensive shops are located in the capital city while the regions lack those shops at all,” he said.
D. Sargsyan said the libraries should also be recovered: “the libraries in the capital are in good conditions, but the libraries in the regions are in poor one,” he said.
The libraries have another problem as well – filling them with new books. “It seems this part has been abandoned, while we definitely face it. If there aren’t fresh books, then the demands of our readers aren’t satisfied. We should do everything to reinforce reader-library communication,” National Library director said.
