EU calls for removal of roaming charges
The German Vice President of the European Parliament, Silvana Koch-Mehrin, has called for the removal of roaming charges for mobile handsets around the EU. Networks around Europe have already lowered the costs due to pressure from the former European Commissioner for Information Society and Media, Viviane Reding.
“It is now time to get rid of the roaming charges within the European Union, and establish a unitary domestic market for telecommunications services.”
The proposal is to remove roaming charges within the EU for EU customers all together by the end of 2011, it will now be decided upon by the European Commission. This is great for people who regularly travel within the EU and don’t want to rack up huge bills in roaming fees.
