Turkish media outlets focus Armenian President’s state visits
President Serzh Sargsyan’s state visits to Cyprus and Greece have been widely covered by Turkish media outlets (Cumhuriyet, Hurriyet, Sabah, Radikal, Vatan, CnnTurk, Zaman, Haber). Particularly, state run “Anadolu” news agency was the quickest to spread materials about those meetings. The Turkish media covered Serzh Sargsyan’s Cypriot and Greek visits making direct or indirect references to them.
Maintaining the substance of information from Cyprus and then from Greece, Turkish media didn’t, anyway, remain apart from making their own comments on the provided materials. The leading media outlets expressed their own attitude or gave private context interpretation though the titles.
Thus, President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan was introduced to the Turkish readers as a reproaching, criticizing, censuring and threatening statesman.
• “Sargsyan condemned Turkey from Cyprus” /Hurriyet/
• “Lecture of morality from Yerevan to Ankara on Euro-integration path” /CnnTurk/
• “Sargsyan’s message to Turkey” /Bugun/
• “Serzh Sargsyan: No integration to EU until ties are strained with us” /Radikal/
• “Armenians and Greeks united against Turkey” /Habepan/
Based on Turkish e-media publications of 17.01.2011, we could differentiate several focuses made on our President’s meetings which were introduced to Turkish audience.
1. President of Armenia said Turkey has no place in EU Family until they accept their past and develop constructive relations with its neighbors.
2. Cyprus approved its commitment to support Armenia over Karabakh conflict.
3. Armenian side supports Cypriot Greeks to settle Cyprus conflict.
So, referring to President’s Greek meetings, Turkish media used the following titles to describe the information.
. “Sargsyan is commissioner for European Union” /Anadolu/
. “Tough words addressed to Turkey” /Vatan/
. “Papoulias supports events of 1915” /Zaman/
. “Papoulias: the same vandal massacred both of us” /Hurriyet/
The information published in Turkish media covered simply the news, but they have particularly focused the following facts.
1. Greek President’s remarks that say the same vandal massacred both, Armenians and Greeks.
2. Armenian President’s statement referring to Turkey that needs to correspond to EU standards.
3. The events of 1915 are supported by Greece.
To conclude, President Serzh Sargsyan’s Greek meetings and signing of several documents have been presented as alarming “message” for Turkey.
