Kurds and Turkish police clashed
Several parliamentary candidates, mostly Kurds, were disqualified in Turkey from the forthcoming June elections, which caused a clash among the protesters and the police.
According to “The Wall Street Journal” Turkey's election commission on Monday disqualified 12 candidates for the elections on grounds they had previous terrorism-related convictions. At least half of those disqualified were from the Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party, or BDP.
Protesters responded with riots in central Istanbul, in southeastern Turkey's main city of Diyarbakir and in several other locations. Video and TV footage showed police firing tear gas and water cannons, while groups of protesters threw rocks and molotov cocktails. Several people appeared to be wounded.
