ECHR found Turkey guilty and ruled to pay 42,000 euros
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) found Turkey guilty in a case filed by applicant Emrullah Derman, Today’s Zaman informs.
The applicant, Emrullah Derman, is a former shopkeeper who lives in İstanbul. Derman alleged that he had been beaten, blindfolded, stripped naked, hosed with water and subjected to falaka (beating on the soles of the feet) when held in police custody in January 1999 on suspicion of robbery.
Just before and after his release he underwent three medical examinations which reported bruising to his shoulders, waist and navel as well as psychological trauma.
The European Court of Human Rights ruled Turkey to pay the man 42,000 euros in non-pecuniary damage and 1,000 euros for costs and expenses.
