A. Zakaryan: Status-quo guarantees long existence for Aliyev’s power
Today South Sudan will declare its independence, and yesterday Sudan recognized the independence of S. Sudan. Panorama.am talked with Republican MP Artak Zakaryan about Sudanese and NK issues.
-North Sudan has official recognized the independence of South Sudan. Comparing the issue with Artsakh conflict, how would you comment on this?
From the point of view of the international law, the right to self-determination shouldn’t have any alternative and shouldn’t face any obstacles. The examples of Kosovo and South Sudan are perfect backgrounds for us to chase our missions. Both, Kosovo and South Sudan have had long histories of conflict; they’ve passed different escalations, negotiations and clashes. Though international political forces consider the conflicts under their interests they find solutions based on the international norms and principles. North Sudan recognizes South Sudan, Serbia recognizes Kosovo and Azerbaijan will sooner or later recognize de jure the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh.
-After Kazan summit the experts try to understand which party needed the most a similar turnaround. Experts believe status quo is in favor to Azerbaijan. Is this true?
The preparations prior to Kazan meeting allowed us think that constructive agreements would be made to advance the conflict. But similar development could be forecast, since Azerbaijan is always appearing with statements to delay the negotiations. All the international resources and efforts were put forth in Kazan meeting. The international community had certain anticipations which were failed due to Azerbaijan. And after Kazan meeting it’s become more obvious that status quo is in favor to Azerbaijan. It allows guaranteeing longer existence for Aliyev’s power.
