Thomas Hammarberg says situation of freedom of expression and media freedom in Turkey is worrying
Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg has welcomed recent changes to the Turkish Constitution, however, he also underlined that the letter and spirit of the present Constitution continue to hinder pluralism and freedom of expression from being fully respected, “Today’s Zaman” daily writes.
“Despite the progress made by Turkey in recent years regarding free and open debates on previously sensitive issues, the situation of freedom of expression and media freedom remains particularly worrying. Urgent measures are needed to uphold these rights and foster a more tolerant atmosphere towards criticism and dissent,” Hammarberg said on Tuesday, releasing a report on Turkey in Strasbourg.”
According to Hammarberg, the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) and the Counterterrorism Law (TMK) continue to seriously impede freedom of expression in Turkey.
