Azerbaijani expert: EU, U.S. likely to impose sanctions on Azerbaijan
The European Union and U.S. have long been calling on Azerbaijan to respect democracy and human rights, however, these appeals are ignored. Moreover, the Azerbaijani authorities respond harshly to democracy appeals. Thus the ruling regime moves towards international sanctions, expert Elkhan Mekhtiyev told Yeni Musavat.
“International sanctions are very likely to be imposed on the Azerbaijani authorities. Little time is left before this stage,” Mekhtiyev said. The expert noted that the harsh reports in European and American media on the property of the Azerbaijani authorities and on their machinations give Azerbaijan a signal, and if the process goes on, the sanctions will be inevitable.
The source reports that last week the European Union imposed sanctions against four top officials of Nakhichevan, head of the Supreme Majlis of Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic Vasif Talibov, his brother, Deputy Mayor of Nakhichevan Magerram Talibov, National Security Minister of Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic Vali Mammadov, and Minister of the Interior Ahmed Ahmedov. They are banned from entering the EU countries.
