World AIDS day marked: 5 children with HIV died in Armenia
Today World AIDS day is marked. A range of events on the topic are scheduled to be held in Yerevan.
Ministry of Healthcare says Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in Armenia has been recorded since 1988, when the first case of HIV was recorded.
In 1989 the first AIDS death was recorded in Armenia. In 2001 a child infected with AIDS died in Armenia. Since 1988 until October 31, 2011 in Armenia 1127 cases of HIV have been recorded, 148 out of which were recorded in 2010.
According to statistics 70,7% of men are infected with HIV, while 29,3% of women get the infection; 2% of children also suffer the virus in Armenia.
In Armenia heterosexual relations, drug addiction are the ways to get infected with HIV, but HIV was also recorded through blood, mother-child, and homosexual relations.
