Radio Azadlyg: Azerbaijani President takes liberties with Supreme Court Chairman
In mid-November Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev attended the opening ceremony of a new regional court building in Oguz region of Azerbaijan. The event was marked by an incident.
The court foyer certainly features a photo corner which represents the “attention and care of national leader Heydar Aliyev and President Ilham Aliyev for the development of the legal and judicial system in the country,” Radio Azadlyg reports, adding that the Azerbaijani President connected with the Supreme Court through video conferencing, asking: “Ramiz, can you hear us?” Azerbaijani Supreme Court Chairman Ramiz Rzayev answered, saying: “Yes, Mr President, I can hear You. Let me, on behalf of all judges, express my appreciation for the attention, for these beautiful buildings and assure You that in response to Your decision we will justify Your confidence at a high level.”
“This is just the historical moment. The President who heads the executive power calls by name and takes liberties with the Supreme Court Chairman, that is the judge, the head of the highest legal instance, while the judicial system is an independent branch of power. And the judge thanks him, saying that he “will justify his confidence.” This demonstrates the modernity and independence of courts dwelling in ultra-modern buildings. Rejoice Oguz, rejoice Azerbaijan, rejoice World Bank!” writes the author.
