R. Denber: If Azerbaijan has nothing to hide, why Strasser is banned to arrive
There is no materialized advancement in human rights in Azerbaijan, Rachel Denber, “Human Rights Watch” Deputy Director of the Europe and Central Asia Division, said in an interview with “obyektiv.tv”, Azerbaijani “Azadlig” daily says.
“Azerbaijan’s political and judicial power cannot cheat with the international community, as young activists have been detained here for their advanced viewpoints. Azerbaijan faces huge problems as the ruling power isn’t committed to hold reforms in freedom of speech. Council of Europe rapporteur on political prisoner Christoph Strasser hasn’t still assumed his office and cannot submit any report on Azerbaijan. If everything is smooth here, why he’s banned to arrive in Azerbaijan,” Ms. Denber said.
The human rights defender has referred to mass harassments of citizens’ properties in Azerbaijan: “Regretfully, Azerbaijan creates an illusion of democracy and human rights in the country. Azerbaijan’s reports submitted to the UN also prove that. The international community anticipates real changes,” concluded Rachel Denber.
