Committee to Protect Journalists names Azerbaijan dangerous place for journalists
Committee to Protect Journalists has released a special report on deadliest countries where journalists’ lives are endangered. Azerbaijan can be found among those deadliest states.
Pakistan remained the deadliest country for the press for a second year. CPJ’s analysis says at least 7 journalists were killed in Pakistan this year, Libya and Iraq, each recorded five fatalities.
CPJ’s analysis also found a high proportion of freelancers among the 2011 victims. Nearly one-third of the toll was composed of freelance journalists, more than twice the proportion that freelancers have constituted over time. Azerbaijani freelance reporter Rafiq Tagi died in November after being stabbed on a Baku street. He had been threatened over his critical coverage of both Islamist politics and government policies.
CPJ has also included Turkey in its list where 8 journalists were arrested.
