Today VivaCell-MTS, a subsidiary of “Mobile TeleSystems” OJSC, and the the Cardiology Clinic of Nork-Marash Medical Center, in cooperation with Ericsson Nikola Tesla company have announced the launch of Mobile-Health pilot project. Mobile-Health is a remote patient monitoring solution used for measurement and transfer of medical parameters from patient to healthcare staff. Measurements are taken at regular intervals or continuously and are transferred over mobile networks to healthcare provider/doctor. Patient makes measurements using special user friendly sensors such as a blood pressure monitor or ECG. Each sensor set is equipped with a user-friendly automated Communication Device gathering data from the above-mentioned sensors via Bluetooth connection and transmitting information over VivaCell-MTS’ network to the back-end system and server, in a secure and accurate format allowing the medical personnel to check patient data in a convenient and efficient way via special web application.

Areas of application of the Mobile-Health are mostly in cardiology and pulmanology. The innovative solution can be used in remote diagnostics support, the treatment of chronically ill patients and those with long-term illnesses, as well as in the treatment of patients living in rural areas having insufficient access to medical care, patients discharged early from hospitals or those in homecare settings, post-operative monitoring, etc.

Among the alarming problems of the modernity are the increasing numbers of chronic and long term patients worldwide, hundred millions of people suffering from asthma, diabetes, etc. Every year about 17 million people are dying from cardiovascular diseases. On the other hand, the number of elderly population (65+) is increasing steadily. If in 2007 only 7% of the population was over 65 years old, this number will increase to 10% in 2025, and to 16% in 2050.

The benefits of the Mobile-Health for both patients and health care providers are obvious: simple measurement of health parameters from any place and any time of the day which means that there is no need for direct interaction between health providers and patients for routine check-up; more time- and resource efficient patient management processes; improved quality of life for patients; accurate data through remote diagnosing and treatment, etc.

Based on the feedback of healthcare professionals of Nork-Marash Medical Center after the end of the pilot project the possible ways of future cooperation will be evaluated.
