Iranian-Azerbaijani relations suffer after diplomatic trips
Every time Azerbaijani senior statesmen arrive in Iran bilateral relations suffer tensions.
On March 12 Azerbaijan’s Defense Minister Safar Abiyev paid two-day visit to Tehran, he had meetings with President of Iran, Ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs, as well as National Security Council Secretary General. Abiyev ensured the Iranian side that small Azerbaijan wouldn’t undertake any hostility against big Iran, he also added that historical-cultural factor unites the two peoples.
Soon after Safar Abiyev’s departure from Iran, Azerbaijan’s national security ministry detained 22 people accused of state treason. They are accused of developing terror attacks against foreigners in Azerbaijan backed by Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps.
However, after Safar Abiyev’s visit to Tehran www.militaryparitet.com website informed that Abiyev’s statements made in Tehran and information covered by Azerbaijani mass media differed.
Earlier in December Head of Azerbaijani President’s Office social-political department Ali Hasanov headed a delegation to Iran. Then, the parties also appeared with statements committed to improve the bilateral relations.
The sides seemed to have reached an agreement to launch cooperation in information field, however, soon manager of Iran’s TV/radio Company’s Baku department Ahmad Kazemi was deported from Azerbaijan together with his family.
To conclude, Iranian mass media seem alarmed with strained Iranian-Azerbaijani relations.
