Serzh Sargsyan arrived in Seoul: Advancement after Washington-hosted summit highlighted
President Serzh Sargsyan is on a working visit in the Republic of Korea, where he participates in Nuclear Security Summit 2012.
Panorama.am correspondent reports that heads of 53 countries and international organizations have arrived in Seoul. The presidents have attended working dinner where advancement materialized after the first nuclear summit held in Washington has been highlighted.
The summit will officially kick off on March 27. The Nuclear Security Summit, the area's largest event, is aimed at highlighting issues related to a joint struggle against nuclear terrorism, protection of nuclear materials and nuclear facilities, as well as prevention of illegal circulation of nuclear materials.
Washington hosted the first Nuclear Security Summit in 2009. At that time, President Obama urged to focus on the nuclear security issues learning lessons from international terrorism threats. Washington-hosted summit put emphasis on the world without nuclear weapons. Heads of 47 states and three international organizations (UN, EU and International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA) were attending the summit.
This year the Nuclear Security Summit has been supplemented by three participants. South Korea, deserving its position of host country, has invited presidents of Denmark, Lithuania and Azerbaijan.
As for the summit, experts see a clear political decision in holding it in South Korea. The agenda of international relations is seeking to launch a nuclear-free zone in Korean Peninsula. North Korea, that used to hold nuclear weapon tests, is in tough talks with the international community.
