Nuclear Security Summit kicked off in Seoul
South Korea hosted on March 27 the Nuclear Security Summit 2012, which Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has also attended. Panorama.am correspondent reported that heads of more than sixty states and international organizations arrived in Seoul to attend the summit. Members of the so called “Nuclear Club” – USA, Russia, China, United Kingdom, France, as well as India, Pakistan and Israel were among them.
Heads of states that host nuclear facilities or have any connection with nuclear energy, materials and technologies could also be found in the summit.
U.S. President Barack Obama stated in his address that nuclear security is “one of the gravest dangers of our time.”
“I think we all understand that no one nation can do this alone. This is one of those challenges in our interconnected world that can only be met when we work as an international community,” Mr. Obama said.
The initiative to hold the Nuclear Security Summit belongs to Barak Obama and it was not by chance that in the speech which he made in Seoul he touched upon the main issues concerning the Nuclear Security: reduction and non-spreading of nuclear weapons, prevention of illegal circulation of nuclear materials, control over the nuclear arsenal and other objects. President Obama has focused on these issues and has expressed his commitment to not only reduce the US nuclear arsenal but also to convince Russia to act in the same way, at the same time to persuade Iran and North Korea, by using diplomatic pressure, to refrain from their plans of creating nuclear weapons.
Though the summit was officially held today, the heads of the countries started discussions since March 26, at the working dinner served in Seoul. According to local media, during those discussions Barak Obama has called on Hu Jintao, president of China, to exert pressure over North Korea.
