No sexual revolution in Armenia: It was evolution
Isn’t our society embarrassed to utter the word “sex”, how much influence does wrong sexual education play on further psychological problems, finally, was there “sexual revolution” in Armenia? Panorama.am talked to Sevada Hakobyan, head of department of sexopathology at Yerevan State Medical University and director of Clinic of Sexopathology.
-Mister Hakobyan, could you evaluate in 5-point system the sexual education of the Armenian society?
-I’m afraid, it can be assessed in 2-3 points. In fact, we have lots of things to do in this aspect. The more information is open and accurate, the more educated and protected our youth will be.
-The younger generation of independence was coping with dilemma between sexual revolution and traditional way of sexual education. It’s believed that it has greatly harmed that generation.
-The problem does exist. The adolescent generation of 90s faced serious problems with sexual and reproductive health. Certain vaccinations were neglected and reproductive function, particularly among male, was deteriorated. When certain sexual taboos were lifted, irregular and unprotected sexual relations boosted and infections were spread.
-Do you really think that “sexual revolution” took place in Armenia?
-I would not call it a revolution, it was more like evolution. We upgraded, but because of lack of accurate information, the situation became tougher. An extended part of society is more educated and tries to get accurate information.
-Internet and TV provide access to information, but is it enough? Isn’t it high time to discuss the topic at schools?
-We suggested to have special sources about sexual education in senior schools, we recommended to form a group of teachers who could be trained in this respect. I think this is a key point of time. We plan to official apply to the Ministry of Education and Science and hope to have the program approved.
P.S. Armenia was the first state in Soviet Union to found Clinic of Sexopathology in 1985.
