Helen Glover and Heather Stanning win first Olympic gold for Britain
Helen Glover and Heather Stanning delivered Britain's first gold medal with a commanding performance in the women's pairs this morning, Daily Mail reported.
The pair, who have dominated in all competitions this year, led from the start to win by a comfortable margin in front of tens of thousands of people at Eton Dorney.
They won by a length from Australia, with New Zealand in bronze position, as millions of Britons stopped what they were doing to cheer the pair home.
The gold has moved Britain up the medal table from 21st to 14th.
After crossing the line, Stanning and Glover embraced and saluted a delirious crowd, which included Princes William and Harry and the Princess Royal.
It is the first gold medal won by a British women's crew at the Olympics.
