Zhoghovurd: Yezidis demand reduction of legal minimum age for marriage to 16 for girls and 17 for boys
According to Zhoghovurd daily, heads of regional committees of Yezidis together with Yezidi Union's deputy chairman Gogo Asoyan submitted a proposal to the Armenian government suggesting a reduction of the legal minimum age for marriage to 16 for girls and 17 for boys.
“It is prescribed by our national traditions,” Asoyan told Zhoghovurd and added that if the government turns down their application, they will hold protests demanding a “fair solution to the problem.”
On July 13, 2012, the Armenian cabinet approved amendments to the RA Family Code establishing 18 years as the legal minimum age for marriage for both girls and boys.
