Armenians in Turkey pursue taking control of preservation of Armenian churches
The Union of Social Solidarity and Culture for Bitlis, Batman, Van, Mush and Sasun Armenians has appealed to Batman Regional Administration to take control of preservation of Armenian churches in Batman and nearby regions.
In his appeal, Aziz Dagci, President of the Union, expressed his concern over the destruction of Armenian churches in Batman, giving as example St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) Armenian Church on Mount Maruta destroyed by unidentified people recently.
Further, Dagci noted that Article 42 of the Treaty of Lausanne stipulates that Turkey shall protect churches and other religious facilities of national minorities in its territory, Turkish news website Sondakika.com reported.
